Making your bed is a simple task that can set the tone for your morning or even your whole day! Your mother wanted you to do it and once again, she probably knows best. Admiral McRaven, the author of “Make Your Bed: Little Things That Can Change Your Life... And Maybe The World” , says, “It's about making your bed right and walking away and going, ‘OK, that's good. That looks good. I'm, as simple as it sounds, I'm proud of this little task I did.’ And that is really what I think sets the tone for the rest of the day.” So whether you’re a stay-at-home mom or a Navy SEAL, this task can help you take on the rest of your day! And who doesn’t like to come home to a cozy well-made bed? We know we do.
Step 1: The Sheets
Start with freshly washed, incredibly soft sheets. Once you have wrangled your fitted sheet onto your bed, spread the top sheet evenly over your mattress. Typically, you would just shove the sides hanging over under your mattress. But wait, you can make your bed look like it’s on the cover of a magazine by simply using the Hospital Corner Technique. Here’s what you’re going to do:
- Neatly tuck sheets under the mattress at the foot of the bed.
- Starting at one corner, take end of the sheet that’s draping and place it on your mattress.
- Tuck the portion that is still hanging down and tuck it neatly under the mattress.
- With the portion of sheet laying on the top of the mattress, make a 45-degree angle and tuck it under the mattress.
- Repeat on other corner
Step 2: The Duvet
A duvet is the what covers your comforter, this is where your style really gets to shine through! The duvet keeps your room stylish, while the comfortable asures you’ll get a good night’s rest. Once the comforter is inside of the duvet and evenly spread onto the bed, you have the option to fold down the top or pull it all the way to the top of the mattress, totally depends on the style you’re going for.
Step 3: The Pillows
This is the really fun part! Start by covering two to four pillows with pillowcases that match your sheets. Stand these up at the headboard and stack if needed. Add two large accent pillows and find smaller accent pillows that compliment the color scheme of your bedroom - throw in different shapes and textures for even more excitement!
